Movement Adventure

by Pamela Norris (PK)

Enjoy exploring movement in a “no wrong answers” approach. Activities are designed to enhance creativity and social/emotional growth.

Learning Target

● I can find elements of dance: shape, time, space, force in all movement.
● I can identify ways that movement affects emotions.

Materials

● Open space

Instructions

1. EXPLORE SHAPE IN MOVEMENT

Make a straight shape with your body.
Show a straight shape found in nature.

Make a curved shape with your body.
Show a curved shape found in nature.

Make an angular shape with your body.
Show an angular shape found in nature.

2. EXPLORE TIME IN MOVEMENT

Move in slow motion.
Show an emotion you are feeling with you face and body
What do you do that is slow? Act it out

Speed up and move quickly
Now how do you feel? Show it with your face and body.
What do you do that is quick? Act it out

3. EXPLORE SPACE IN MOVEMENT

Melt to the floor and explore low space.
Show emotions you are feeling.
What activity do you normally do in a low space?

Stretch up into a high space.
Show emotions you are feeling.
What activity do you normally do in a high space?

4. EXPLORE FORCE IN MOVEMENT

Now, try some smooth sustained movements.
Do you feel a different emotion when you move smoothly?

Switch to sharp movements with quick stops and starts.
How do sharp movements make you feel?

Reflection

Write in your journal or draw in your sketchbook
● Which of these movement felt the best to you?
● Did you notice different ways of moving affected you your felt?
● How could you use movement to self regulate? If you feel stressed could you try low, slow movement to relax? What other ideas do you have?

Extra

● Draw, sculpt or paint the movements you chose and how they made you feel.
● Dance to your favorite music and pay attention to how it makes you feel. Are you using slow, quick, low, high, smooth, or sharp movements? A combination?
