Portland Taiko, Oregon Nikkei Endowment and Young Audiences of Oregon are teaming up in spring 2013 to enrich the lives of your students with an in-theatre performance combined with an onsite traveling exhibit and historical discussion.
About the Performance:
“Rock The Boat” is based on Portland Taiko’s meaningful school assembly program, which fosters cultural awareness and respect for differences among elementary school students using taiko drumming and interactive storytelling. With emphasis on taking pride in who you are, communication and respect, our engaging performers provide tools for dealing with intolerance and discrimination while involving the audience in a lively celebration of Asian-American culture and the differences that make us all unique.
About the Exhibit:
Rock the Boat (RTB) will combine performances by Portland Taiko with exhibits created in collaboration with Oregon Nikkei Endowment (O.N.E.). Context will be provided in a pre-show discussion, interactive taiko 50 minute performance, and post-show small discussion with O.N.E.’s Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center docents.
RTB uses the history of taiko in America as a vehicle for exploring the cultural and political history of Japanese and Japanese Americans in the Pacific Northwest. The program is designed to foster greater cultural awareness and respect for differences using taiko drumming and interactive storytelling. With emphasis on taking pride in who you are, communication and respect, our engaging performers provide tools for dealing with intolerance and discrimination while involving the audience in a lively celebration of Asian-American culture and the differences that make us all unique.
